What is gum (periodontal) disease?

Answer: Periodontal disease is the deterioration of the supporting structures of the teeth. Also known as periodontitis, it involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth and may eventually lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth if left untreated.

Periodontitis is caused by a convergence of bacteria that adhere to and grow on the tooth’s surfaces, along with an overly aggressive immune system response against these bacteria. Periodontitis is very common and in North America has a prevalence of 30-50% of the population, but only about 10% have severe forms. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe and radiographs by visual analysis to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth.

What are dental implants?

Answer: A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a dentist or specialist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.
